This is the herd’s only stop on the West Coast in 2026.

It started on July 2, 2024, when 100 elephants arrived in Newport, Rhode Island. They found their way to Beverly Hills on June 27, 2025. No rush. They move sedately; they are elephants after all, plus they happen to be made of wood. If you were lucky (as Jo Saia and I were), you got to see the herd of 100 last year in LA. If not, one of your fondest wishes has just come true. Thirty of these elephants have now traveled to Downtown Livermore, continuing their journey to share their story with the world.

Along the way they have touched the lives of tens of thousands. Average persons have created blankets and garlands for them to wear while on display. Some people uprooted their lives to travel with the elephants and act as docents at multiple locations along the tour.

The Great Elephant Migration is a public art exhibition of life-size Indian elephants, a global fundraising adventure to amplify Indigenous knowledge and inspire the human race to share space. Each elephant is modeled on a real animal living in southern India’s Nilgiri Hills. Around 200 Indigenous artists of the Coexistence Collective built them by hand from Lantana camara, an invasive weed that crowds elephants out of the forests they depend on.

Harvesting the weed used to make the sculptures contributes to restoring the habitat and supplies much needed jobs to the local economy. The exhibitions raise awareness with proceeds supporting more than 20 conservation groups working on human and wildlife coexistence. If you fall deeply in love with one of the elephants, I have good news – sales of the sculptures can be arranged to help fund the mission.
