35th Annual Children’s Book Illustrators Exhibition

Sun Gallery

Ongoing – May 23

Reception – March 21, Noon-3:00

A Little Background

In case you didn’t know, Sun Gallery is a long-standing non-profit community arts center fostering visual art exhibitions and educational programs that reflect the diverse cultural populations of Hayward. It offers visual art exhibitions, free monthly art classes and a summer camp for kids, emphasizing community, environmental awareness and art accessibility.

In recent years, Sun Gallery faced some lean times, as many nonprofits do. Yet, with community support it weathered the storm. This latest exhibition is just another example of Sun Gallery as an essential luminary in the firmament of the East Bay arts.

The Exhibition

‍ ‍This year, a dozen children’s book illustrations will be on view. The children’s book authors will be present at the Reception (see above).

Additionally, on view is the encore presentation of Sun Gallery's Dreamers installation, a part of the Gallery's permanent collection, donated by the artists, Peter and Maureen Langenbach. Stop by and sign your support for Dreamers directly on the artwork.

In conjunction with this exhibition, Sun Gallery has collaborated with the Hayward Rotary Club and the Hayward Educational Fund to present the Many Hands, One Masterpiece initiative to HUSD second graders, expanding equitable access to the arts by introducing underserved students to a legacy children's book illustrator exhibition and by fostering cultural awareness through storytelling, visual interpretation and shared creative experiences. The project increases youth participation in the arts and demonstrates how cultural institutions, such as Sun Gallery, serve as community-centered learning spaces.
